White sage

My prize white sage continues to grow. This was the only successful plant from about 400 seeds. They are extremely difficult to grow from seed.

Mystery plant

I bought the predecessor to these years ago from a cactus expert. While he had huge knowledge of cactus, he said, I've no idea what this one is except it comes from Africa.

They rest lightly in the soil with practically no roots. They throw off pups each year. Anyone know what it is?

Spring is coming

Well, at least in here southern California, there are a few signs that spring isn't that far off.. Days are about 70, and the rainy season this year has been a non-event.

We planted some roses today, and Malo, our turtle, should be coming out of hibernation fairly soon. He was an indoor turtle until last year when he got too big. So he lives in a large plastic pond in the backyard, fenced in so he can't escape. Last year he just sort of wandered around sluggishly. This year though he buried himself under some rubble, and there he snoozes - at least for now.

Let the Bare Root Frenzy Begin!

Angel Face Rose

"Earth-Kind" Roses, studied at Texas A&M University, aren't your high-maintenance fluffy fleur. They thrive despite high alkaline soil between 8 and 8.4 (roses prefer acid soil around 6.5), no fertilizer or amendments, no sprays for fungus or bugs, no supplemental water after the first year. They exhibit outstanding disease and insect resistance and put on a good bloom.

Angel face is included in the "Earth-Kind" directory, but is not yet designated Earth-Kind or a Texas Superstar. However, Ohio State University says it's resistant to black spot, and that's good enough for me. Bought three.

Also succumbed to three (each) of J&P's Outrageous (orange) and Sun Sprite (yellow). Also supposed to be hardy buggers.

UPDATE: Mom said take the Angel Face back, it's a mold magnet. So we did.

Big Rainbow heirloom

From Burpees

Here in LA, it's getting near time to plant the seedlings. So many tomatoes to choose from. Note to self: Make sure all vegetables are labelled this year to avoid having six species of hot peppers and not knowing what they are.

Yikes

It's been too long since we posted! Well, it's winter, even if winter isn't much in Los Angeles. Plus, we were in Maui for ten days over the holidays. And they really don't have winter there - it was mid 80's most days.

More posts coming real soon now!
