20 Crowns Later....

How to Plant Asparagus

Planted 5 rows of 4 crowns each. I followed the directions on the package, which said to lay the roots on their side and cover with soil, 'making sure not to suffocate the root'. The mechanism of suffocation isn't explained, but I tried to leave a shoot (if any) sticking out of the soil, and to cover the roots with no more than 1" of soil if there were no shoots. This is completely different than the directions given by the University of Minnesota website.

Ah, well. Should they live, they'll make an excellent screen for the ever-enlarging compost pile.
