The Compost Sifter Story

compost-0881.jpg
Compost bin, Compost sifter, and compost.

I wanted to build a sifting box for the compost today, but I often fail in the woodworking department, so at the first attempt the screws were bent, the box was crooked and falling apart, and I threw myself on the bed in despair. Even Peggy Sue Cat didn't want to talk to me. But then I pulled myself together, drove to OSH, bought self-sinking carpentry screws and a phillips head drill bit, corner braces and tacks. Took the whole thing apart and started over. Voila! Compost sifting box. My dad would be so proud, I learned something from his early depression-era education as a mason's assistant.

We made "Mel's Mix": 1/3 compost, 1/3 peat moss, and 1/3 vermiculite. Mel suggests rolling it around in a tarp to mix it (akin to cement mixer action).
