Reseeding
The reseeding is going much faster than I thought. After several hours of raking and preparation, a large part of the backyard was ready to be reseeded. I used lawn soil from Home Despot that has fertilizer in it. Now it just needs watering 2-3 times day.
I did much less preparation in the front yard, and it reseeded quickly, so this should too.

Winter Coming

I returned from Sri Lanka's tropical weather to 30-degree nights here in Utah. We've already had our first snow. The daikon (Japanese radishes) survived and were ready to harvest. (Yes, we lost half of them to voles, but there was still plenty for us.) I made daikon salad and two kinds of pickle.
Meanwhile, the chickens are now 9 weeks old. They'd outgrown their brooder cages, so as soon as the first stall on our barn was complete we moved them out of the house. They love the extra space-- but immediately began sorting out the pecking order. Roosters bumped chests and chased each other. They were quite fun to watch, but seem to have worked it out now, Here, one of the roosters sits on Suellen's foot.

Getting ready to move
Part of moving is fixing up our house now to get it ready to sell. While we've done huge work in the back yard, it's been a work in progress. Now we need to finish it.
Part of that entails making a nice lawn where bare spots and thatch are now. The best way to get rid of thatch, and I've researched this, is old school. Use a rake. It's tedious work, if good exercise, and the yard should be ready for reseeding in a week or so.

We're moving
Sometime in the next few months Sue and I will be moving to Connecticut, far from the unending traffic jams and stratospheric housing prices of Los Angeles. We'll be moving to the Hartford area, where I grew up.
Maple trees, winter snows, we won't be able to garden year round ("wahoo", says Sue), but as we'll be out in the country a bit, there will be lots of forests, hikes, maybe the occasional bear in the backyard like my sister, who lives in the area, sometimes gets.
The cats probably won't be able to go outside - coyotes are there now too.
More on the move in future posts.

Mermaid Rose
AKA the barbed wire of the rose kingdom. It has long, sharp thorns that grow at a slant from the branch, not straight out like most roses. Thus, it is very easy to get snagged on them.

Serrano still producing
These serranos are quite hot, and a habanero plant next to it is about to put out flowers - in October!

Tropical Rain

It's been raining a lot recently here in Sri Lanka, a heavy, warm, tropical rain that encourages plant growth as well as mosquitoes. It's amazing how fast things grow. Trees I saw planted five years ago now tower over buildings. The flowers around my doorstep have overgrown the steps. This is far different from my home where, I was informed, it snowed yesterday morning.

Water Hyancinth
Only blooms once a year, and for only one day. It's in Malo's little pond (he's our turtle.)

Welcome
While reviewing the stats for this blog I was startled to discover that this month we're averaging over 2,000 visits a day, a big jump from previous months.
Couldn't tell from the stats where the new hits were coming from, so, whoever you are - Welcome!

Still ripening
A late harvest this year. Pruning obviously isn't our strong point. There's five species of tomatoes in this rat's nest.

Not sure what this one is. Quite spectacular, isn't it?

Not sure what it is
Well, it's some kind of pepper. But the tag identifying it is long gone. Guess we'll have to wait and see what it becomes!

Bob & Sue on Vacation

Far horizons & then some
I'm planning a semi-secret vacation for Bob -- he knows we are going, but not where.
Hint: lots of water to stand in ... trees to hug ... and, yes, high-speed internet access.
