Winter Coming

Chicken October 23 2006 022.jpg

I returned from Sri Lanka's tropical weather to 30-degree nights here in Utah. We've already had our first snow. The daikon (Japanese radishes) survived and were ready to harvest. (Yes, we lost half of them to voles, but there was still plenty for us.) I made daikon salad and two kinds of pickle.

Meanwhile, the chickens are now 9 weeks old. They'd outgrown their brooder cages, so as soon as the first stall on our barn was complete we moved them out of the house. They love the extra space-- but immediately began sorting out the pecking order. Roosters bumped chests and chased each other. They were quite fun to watch, but seem to have worked it out now, Here, one of the roosters sits on Suellen's foot.
