Pre-Emptive Strike

Garden 20070325 002.jpg

In a new attempt to keep the dreaded voles out of the garden, I dug the dirt out of our raised beds and stapled chicken wire over the bottom. Then I put the dirt back in, taking the opportunity to add some composted manure. We'll see if this helps keep the voracious little critters away from my cukes this year!

BTW, as I was replacing the dirt into the raised bed, a vole ran from under my feet. He was too quick for me, and lived to eat another day.

As far as using plants, like onions and marigolds, to keep voles away, forget it. Voles eat onions and marigolds. We have thought about using chickens to eat the voles, but they'd probably eat the plants, too.

(Any suggestions for vole prevention are welcome!)
